Tomiki Aikido and Tomiki Ryu Aikido are very different. Tomiki Aikido (the competitive one), if I remember correctly, is practiced mainly in Japan under the Japanese Aikido Alliance (JAA). Tomiki Ryu Aikido is very strict about the aspect of non-competitive behavior. Ironically enough, what I consider to be the more disceplined of the two is taught in the United States under the International Aikido Alliance (IAA). The two alliances have not spoken for over twenty years because when a group of IAA members (not truly members yet because IAA was just about to be created) went to Japan, they were tricked into a competition. The end result was the IAA members severely injuring the JAA members, and all because the IAA members were trained to use self defense rather than compete. When they were attacked, they responded without thinking. The JAA never forgave the IAA, and the IAA doesn’t care. If I were to choose, I would pick an IAA dojo. Unfortunately, last time I checked there were only eight of those in the U.S. and each one is in a different state. The only one I can locate at the moment is in Houston, Texas. If I can find the rest, I’ll be sure to post them.
