The different styles of aikido are pretty simple to categorize in two groups: there are the self defense and sport oriented styles such as yoshinkai and ShodokanTomiki. And then the other general category is the aikikai or hombu styles which are generally more interested in meditation and spiritual development than practical application. If you want to improve your self defense or grappling skills, find a Yoshinkai or Shodokan Tomiki school. If you want to develop your spiritual side, look for a aikikai or hombu school. All will teach the same techniques, but from different perspectives. I’m a Tomiki stylist and find it mixes well with BJJ training. In reality aikido is just a stand up style of grappling that specilaizes in two arms length training instead of close in gripped grappling or floor grappling. It’s all jujitsu if you go far back enough in the hsitory.
