I have at times, studied Choy Li Fut. Here are the facts in my opinion:

I think it “can be” an effective art. I do not believe the history as it is given. Nor do I believe that any system of self-defense has that many forms.

If you look at things logically, then it is easy to understand that in your youth, that will be the best time to learn techniques and forms. But as you advance in age, one naturally slows down and other things become more important. A newer form might take more time to be “as good” at in comparison to your previous excellence at learning the forms in your youth.

To master 29 forms (20% for SIFUS) according to some sites on the net is likely ridiculous and not achievable in today’s hectic world.

What are Choy Li Fut’s Original Forms? So much was added by later masters if indeed they come from them.

In my opinion, Doc Fai Wong, while an excellent martial artist is probably more concerned with the marketing and money aspect of things.

If people want to do Choy Li Fut a favor, return to its roots and then with a adequate vision, “rebuild” it while keeping the outstanding idea of a combination of North and South.

As it stands now, Choy Li Fut is a disorganized hodge-podge of techniques and forms with everyone and their mother claiming that it “all” belongs.

If that is so, I hope you manage to live to the incredible age of about 150 years because that is about the time you need and every year, you’re behind as more gets added.

The wrong people are in charge of this great system.
