Okay, further online reading and local research leads me to believe that Aikido or a hybrid including it is most likely the style I was trying to identify. Turns out we do have one person in my city teaching a style of Aikido with some Karate mixed in, and strong emphasis on the philosophy of Aikido. Sounds tailor made.
