I am currently studying han ming jok hapkido. The have my second kueb currently. I am also a continually practicing 1st degree black belt in taekwondo. Hapkido is based around three main principles. Circles, water and influence.
Hapkido is not just primarily wrist locking and throwing, but also various ki strikes, pressure points, and counters. Currently the president of the hamingjok hapkido association is grandmaster in sun seo. I had the pleasure of learning at his seminar with other masters. A highlight of hapkido is it definitely “closes the gap” if incorporated with other martial arts.
Taekwondo is great for distance with its kicks and strikes but in a close-up situation hapkido provides excellent techniques and locks that allow you to disable, strike and/or counter. The adherance to the principles of hapkido is crucial to the techniques. Many of them need to be done quickly using the opponents own power to be done effectively.
