I currently am a student of Hsing I and realize that hsing i is simple, direct and adaptable in combat. But with out a good foundation of basic fundamental skill (san so, hip motion, dragon body, standing meditation etc)one can not master the true core of hsing i. Hsing I is easy to learn but hard to master. Remember that there are different froms of Hsing I but all have the same core of the 5 elements. Also remeber that every Hsing I student has a little pa kua and every pa kua student has a little hsing i. Here is a little history pertaining to the relation to hsing i and the art of shotokan. Hsing is used to idealy combat japanese arts because of the use of the lead hand and the lead foot(those that study hsing i should no what I mean). Example shotokan power generation comes from the rear hand or rear foot driving through the target like a base ball bat. Hsing I power comes from the lead hand or foot whipping power (ball and chain or bull whip).
