JKD also differientiates itself by the teachers who teach it, as well as thier individual abilities. My instructor( trained by the co-founder of JKD James Lee AND Bruce himself) stresses angles and mobility and recoginition on intent.Mostly, JKD as I’m taught, stresses on individual body types, as well as individual abilities( as Bruce & James taught), and not a system of movements. Mind you, all humans are creatures of habit, and tend to repeat certain habits, or certain responses/ reactions to certain stimuli. To defeat this action, requires a certain denial of self, or a willingness to “reprogram” ourselves. I’ve found that by studying most traditional martial arts, you’re basically taught to box yourself into the confines of that “system”, and by only staying in it for many years will you be taught the real root of that system. For if you look hard enough, almost all Asian originated martial arts look identical in thier beginning stages, and (just look at most “masters”) in the end look almost identical. JKD in its original formulation as meant to deal with breaking someone elses tradition, and creating your own non-tradition. For example, when dealing with everyday stresses of life, some people face them head on, some people pause, think, and plan a course of action, some people just let things happen, and really don’t care, some people let stress “freak” them out, and some people commit suicide. Any one of these responses can be altered with proper preperation, or “reprogramming”. And that’s JKD in a nutshell.
