I agree that you DONT have to have mastered ANY styles to practice the JKD way of combat. If you go to any good JKD school they will teach you the most EFFICIENT parts of boxing, muay thai, silat, kali, wing chun and many other martial arts. You can then mix these moves up and use whichever is needed at the time.

If you have mastered 3 styles of martial arts then very good but you will probably not use all the moves you learnt in a fight. I understand what you guys are saying, that you cannot flow from one style to another if you have no style to begin with. However, after learning the most efficient kicks from panajakman, trapping from wing chun, elbows, knees and headbutts from silat and traditional boxing with some nice grappling moves thrown in.

Without may i add, learning or mastering the whole of these arts, just the most efficient moves. Then you can easily flow through the different ranges of fighting and apply the moves from the different martial arts. “Absorb what is useful and discard the rest” said Bruce Lee.

If you want to master 3 different martial arts then thats brilliant. If you want to learn how to defend yourself in a street fight then go to a JKD class, its reality based. I myself have a background of shotokan karate but I wouldnt use any of it in a street fight, i’d kick the guy in the balls then nut him :)
