I’ve been practicing jujitsu as part of JKD for some time. As much as I enjoy grappling, I have used it on the ground only once, and as a last resort. The ground is a bad place to be in a real fight. As a rule of thumb, proximity negates skill. More correctly, it negates reaction time. There is no closer proximity than tied up on the ground. Jujitsu relies on the other person playing by civilized rules and it eliminates the ability to escape quickly. You do not want to wrestle with someone who is willing to bite, scratch, gouge and hook. Learn enough Jujitsu so that you can go to the ground if necessary, but learn it primarily so that you can defend yourself against being taken to the ground. Become skilled in striking first, everything else second. Striking skills and footwork are much more time consuming to learn than grappling.
