Kendo was not specifically about how to kill a man with a sword — regardless of the blade’s size. A monk - who had once be Samurai - once met two warriors training in the montains. The monk was offered a wooden sword, and when refused, picked a samurai’s war fan. He single handedly beat a samurai warrior, stating that without balance of mind, body, and soul, the sword is nothing more than a piece of metal with a sharp edge. This and other historical recounts can be found in the book “The Art of Japanese Warfare”. I can’t remember the author’s name.
