Of course we’re all biased according to our styles. But I’d be lying if I didn’t find the whole style vs style argument and Western approach to martial arts wildly entertaining. People really get upset about it. I’ll be the first to point out the shortcomings of my style. (ie groundfighting)

I’ve been training in Muay Thai for the last year and a half here in Bangkok. It’s been a real eye-opener. For the Thais, there’s no reason to do this 5 days a week unless you’re going to make money from it. But for me, there’s no reason to fight for money when I’ve got a job that pays better than boxing ever could. I also need my brain to do what I do. They just don’t get it. They also don’t really understand why you’d train so hard for something that might never happen, like a street fight. Thailand’s so peaceful, people don’t brawl (like Westerners) because violence is looked down upon.

Another peculiar thing is that these top boxers have no attitude, something you’d expect in the West. Some of the guys I’m friendly with are three and four-belt champions; they’re all over the magazines. They don’t talk; they just do it. They want to do their best, bring honor to their camp and their teachers and make enough money to send home to mom and dad.

What I post on this site on the various pages is just an indulgence in a viewpoint and understanding I don’t share anymore. I’m not attached to it. Keep with the KM, and I hope it’s there for you when you need it.
