That may be the most bland explanation of Muay Thai ever written, but it’s true. Muay Thai will teach you to punish your opponent for virtually everything he does. If he tries to stay away, he gets kicked. If he tries to get close, he gets kneed, punched and then elbowed. A correct elbow will knock almost anyone out in one hit. If you don’t believe me, either go to Lumpinee on Superfight night or to google videos and look up Thai boxing highlights. (The second way will be cheaper.) I watched a guy from my camp get knocked out by a lightning-fast elbow in the second round of his fight for the Lumpinee championship.

Muay Thai keeps you safe behind a wall of bone if you do it right. You advance at will and take people apart. Size is removed from the equation, since no one can take kicks to the leg over and over again without losing some steam. I’ve never used it outside the ring, but Thailand’s a mellow place. It’s only in the West that people go looking to fight when they never learned how.

Look for a school that will bore the life out of you for a couple of months. You shouldn’t be doing anything until you’ve got your legs right. Learn to move like a Thai boxer and you’ll be ahead of the game in any fight, regardless of what power you’ve got. Movement is everything. The Thais say: If you want to walk, crawl. If you want to run, walk. Keep a cool heart; stay focused.
Put the time into your fundamentals and you’ll be ready for anything. Good luck, โชกดี
