What the anonymous poster was telling about mercenaries was not really true. When ninjutsu became quite popular (without the ninjas being hunted down to kill) a lot of other japanese were enthousiastic to learn it, and several other schools came, commercialised, like all martial arts now, but the true ninjas remained in schools behind closed doors, way back in the woods. They gave the finishing touch to ninjutsu (allthough there never is one) and made him almost unvincible.
The “fake” ninjas wanted to be hired, and they went on playing assassasin, while the real ninjas only let themselves be hired if the jonin wanted them to. One of the most famous ninjas, Hattori Hanzo, helped shogun tokugawa (I think?) with his whole family and tokugawa ruled widely afterwards and so the arts of ninjutsu were used by the ninjas to sustain the peace in their region. All meanings were based on good intent, after all, they were first yamabushi who loved nature and life more than anybody else. It was only the wicked society that made them do things they may regret.
Note: I am also a ninja student, just 7th kyuu yet, under Guus Lekanne dit Deprez, 9th dan Iga Ryu Ninjutsu, original style, melted and reforged by time, under direct training with Soke Masaaki Hatsumi. The style looks like and leans to Togakure ninjutsu, but really a combination of all.
