To Nuno:
You said “how much is dedicated to these useless aspects”. That proves how little you understand about this martial art, or to any true martial art I would guess.
Magic and spirituality come from within, a strengthening tool as every bit as necessary as developing your physical body. Do not think of this particular magic as equating to a street performer or an illusionist, for there is no comparison between the two. Developing one’s Chi and focusing your mind is far from a wasted effort, as a man who has no strength of character can seldom (if ever) find the true inner strength that comes from this.
To others:
Too many equate true fighting styles with the diluted tournament styles that we Americans have (unfortunately) made so prevalent. It does not need to be flashy or exaggerated to be a martial art, it needs merely be effective at achieving your goal. You forget that most styles evolved as a form of defense, both of self, family, and society, and yet at the same time they also served to mold the practitioner’s personality and mentality to be one of compassion and good will.
I do not study to be flashy, or to impress others, but to better my body, my mind, my sense of self, and yes, my spirit. I seek my Satori if you will.
I study to live.
