One more thing, there is no “founder” of Shuri-te. There is a lineage. And most agree that the fountainhead for all Chinese hand (Kara-te) was Kanga Sakugawa, student of Pechin Takahara, who went to China to learn as well. Sokon Matsumura was his student, and Yatsune “ANKOH” Itosu was his student. It is Itosu’s Pinan katas, and his breakdown of Nihanchi nidan/sandan, and Passai sho/ Kusanku sho, that are practiced around the world. Oh Gichin Funakoshi was Itosu’s student, as well as Matsumura’s, which is why Shotokan’s kata’s look like ours. They were altered and renamed when they got to Japan. And the kanji “kara” meaning China, or Tang, after the Tang dynasty, was changed to mean “empty” due to anti-Chinese sentiment in Japan at the time.
