Another problem, or should I say “misunderstanding” that I find in Shorin-Ryu, is that it isin’t flashy, and you rarely see it in competition. But the real reason you won’t see it is because, by it’s origin, it was used for survival. If the techniques weren’t effective, you diddn’t go home. Also, Shuri-Te (the original name of shorin ryu), is the ancestor of Shtotkan (Funakoshi was a contemporary and a student of Ankoh Itosu), and Tae Kwon Do, Shoto Kai, and others. A unique, but hidden fact about shorin-ryu, is that in all katas, and renzo kokkuen(continuist fist), is that all strikes, are directed at pressure points. Therefore, by this very fact, this art was clearly not for competition. Also , prior to 1945, all Okinawan teachers worked with each other for the preservation of it’s arts.
