I’m a Shorinji Kenshi of 21 years standing, currently holding the rank of 3rd dan. I would just like to say that when you say “religion” in your brief explanation of Shorinji Kempo above, the English words “ethics” or “philosophy” would be better suited, as the concept of religion is so greatly different in Japan.
The real reasons Shorinji Kempo is not so widely practiced in the West are twofold: firstly, there are vast areas in which there are no Shorinji Kempo branches, so the spread and consequent uptake is slow, and seocndly (and more importantly), Shorinji Kempo has never been the subject of a Hollywood movie, and so its very name remains unknown to many people.
