I am currently training in both Judo and Shotokan Karate. I agree that in a sparring match a grappling stylist is likely to pummell the average karateka.
However, Judo and jiu jitsu players often forget that in a real fight Shotokan stylists will be striking for the groin, knees, throat, eyes, neck, ears, and assundry other sensitive areas with full force.
Modern MMA matches tend to bar that kind of thing for the sake of not running out of contestants.
