I have done shitkai for a longtime now and i feel it is based more on self defense and is more practical than most forms of martial arts, the high stances allow for adaptability and with speed and power which is necessary for it to be used effectively.
I would also try to emphasis all forms of karate differ from dojo to dojo and teaching methods determine the final outcome. For example my local dojo is highly based on kata and sparring is a sideline and the one I attend is based on the practicality of karate and the basics are taught as priority. Then sparring and kata is taught as a sideline as such but is not neglected.
What i am trying to say the write up on this is general but i would suggest find your local dojo and try it for a few weeks then change until you find a style you like.
