TKD was originally devised for fighting grandmas. The kicks are quick and snappy to hit granny with just the force necessary to knock her down, but not to cause any serious injury. Over time, many people adopted TKD to fight the grannies giving them a hard time on the bus, in their neighborhoods, and at the local bakery. It wasn’t long before all the grannies were at last defeated.

Somewhere along the line though, TKD became all about the money, and people forgot about the art’s true purpose. They took their granny-fighting skills, padded up nice and cozy, and whippy-snappy kicked each other for points. They forgot how weak it was.

That was until the Thais started battering the granny fighters their shins, knees and elbows. But rather than concede that TKD is the wet noodle of the martial arts world, they tend to choose idle armchair boasts, despite the laundry list of humiliating defeats in Bangkok’s Lumpinee and Rachadamnoern stadiums.

Contrary to what TKD guys will tell you, the Muay Thai round kick is very fast and feels like getting hit with a baseball bat. Your shins are about all you can use to stop it. If you don’t block it on your shins, you’re better off trying to trap it or getting out of the way, because you stand a good chance of having your arm broken.

Now let’s say you do trap it, you will immediately get yanked close in to the kicker, who will pull you into range of a fist or an elbow. You will let go of the leg; it’s natural when your face is being split open. When you do, the Thai boxer will place his hands behind your head, and yank your head into his rising knee. You won’t be standing after that, and it’s probably safer that way.
