Most peoples encounters with this art are from a load of elderly people practicing slow movements for health benefits. However in its full form, these seemingly purposeless movements hide many martial applications.
When mastered it is one of the most brutal martial arts around with much emphasis on internal damage. However, on the downside, it takes years and years to reach practical effectiveness in martial application.. but you can practice it to you basically die of old age which is its greatest merit. You wont see many 90 years olds defending themselves with say kick boxing etc
