I don’t know if you know chinese, but the way we pronounce it is Tai4 ji3 chuan2. there are 4 tones in mandarin- 1st is high flat tone, 2nd is a lower rising tone, 3rd is a kind of hook tone going down and all the way up, 4th is like a harsh exclamation point going from high up all the way down.
All these variations in spelling and american pronounciation only occured b/c of faulty phonetic translations. For example, I have seen about half a dozen variations on Gong-fu in English, but only one in Chinese.
It is much easier and simpler to say that taiji is an internal art and a way of life. This is diffeent from external way of life- rely on force, strength, technique, prowess. It is simply described as soft as cotton and strong as steel
