The words Tai Chi Chuan or Taijiquan (太极拳) are two different spellings of the same word. The pronunciation is the same - “Tai” (like a bow “tie”) “Jee” (like ‘Golly “gee” Batman’) and “chwan.” It is often badly translated as “supreme ultimate fist” leading some to think that the name implies that the style is a superior martial art. In fact, there is no such thing as a “superior martial art” and that is not the meaning of the name.

Tai Chi Chuan is written as three syllables. but it is really only two words. 太极 “Tai Chi” is a compound word that is literally translated as “Supreme ultimate” or “Great Extremity” or “Cosmic Polarity.” It refers to a philosophical concept of the dualistic nature of the Universe. This is also represented in the “Taiji symbol” known in the west as the “Yin-Yang” symbol. “Quan” 拳 or “Chuan” literally means “Fist” but can also mean “boxing” “pugilism” “routine” or “martial style.” What the name means is “The martial art based on the theory of yin and yang.”

While it is true that Taijiquan (or Tai Chi Chuan) is highly respected for both its health benefits and its potential as a powerful and effective combat system, calling it the “Supreme Ultimate Fist” has lead to some unfortunate misunderstandings.

Perhaps it was a marketing idea.
