The body conditioning in Uechi Ryu is evident
in the Iron Shirt Practice of Chinese Gung-Fu.
During the Boxer Rebellion, the Westerners were
amazed at the seemingly magical powers of the
rebellious Chinese who were not affected by
the European firearms. The Isometric breathing
exercises have an accumalative benefit which
enables the body to withstand hard blows and
creates a barrier that protects the body, particularly the internal organs from being
permanently damaged. This is a unique aspect of
Uechi-Ryu which is evident in the Sanchin practice. The kata - Sanchin when performed properly is a complete work-out which leaves
the practitioner quite exhausted.
