Uechi Ryu is the combination of Okinawan style karate with Shaolin Kungfu. The original name for Uechi Ryu was Pungai-Noon (spelling?). Meaning half-hard, half-sof in Chinese. Some of the art is the typical “hard” japanese karate, and the other half of the style is incorporated with soft, flowery, circular techniques which are typical in ur chinese martial arts. I practiced this art for the past two years, but have recently switched to Muay Thai due to moving from Massachusetts (where Uechi is prevalent) to New Jersey (where it isn’t). This art is rather difficult to master requiring many years of practice, but is very practical in terms of self-defence. It is a brutal striking style which employs some devastating attacks (they kick with there toes), and much of the class focuses on “katikate”, which is body hardening (shin bones, arm bones, toes, fingers, and abs). My friend has been practicing this style since he was 12, and when you connect with his shins, its like being hit with a bat, no exaggeration.
