Practitioners don’t tend to consider it one of the “four” original kara-te styles… the histories as told to Mattson was that there were two styles in Okinawa before Uechi left for China — goju and shorinji.
In China, Uechi became a teacher of kung-fu, pangainoon, and only taught what became “Uechi’s style” (Uechi Ryu) when he ws persuaded to years later….
