I have been studying wado ryu for roughly eight years now along with kobudo weopons from shito ryu karate, jo-do and muso gikkiden ryu iaido, and have achieved a 1st Dan level in wado and iaido. In my experience (limited as it may be) wado ryu is more complex in its principles than many other karate style, obviously this is not noticed till higher levels, the main example to sight would be the use of tai sabaki evasion rather than direct defence that are more common in styles like shotokan and shorin ryu. It is important to notice that this emphasis can be found through all technique with higher stances, and kata that is often considered less ‘beautiful’. There are mre advanced concepts such as not holding onto power in strikes, regrettably i do not know the proper term for this, If you see high level practiioners of other karate styles, there raw power is quite a sight indeed. This is because they hold their power the whole way through a technique. If done correctly wado oka should achieve equal power with less effort, letting go of the power before the end of a technique if done properly may not look as effective but can be equally if not mre effective. You may say why bother, thats when you discover the speed this technique develops which is phenominal. However i have b een told it takes almost all practioners till 4th dan or higher to even start really understanding this concept, so i have a long way lol
